Singapore’s Ambitious AI Expansion: Tripling Talent, Boosting Resources, and Pioneering Language Models

Singapore, a dynamic hub for global tech giants, is set to triple its artificial intelligence (AI) experts to an impressive 15,000 as part of a bold national strategy, as announced by Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. The nation, home to Asian headquarters for tech titans like Google’s Alphabet and Microsoft, is positioning itself for a significant leap in AI capabilities.

Notably, Nvidia, a major player in the semiconductor industry, reported a substantial revenue of $2.7 billion from Singapore in the quarter ending October. This impressive figure positions Singapore just behind the U.S, China, and Taiwan in contributing to Nvidia’s global success, showcasing the country’s pivotal role in the tech landscape.

In a strategic move to fortify its AI infrastructure, Singapore aims to enhance high-performance computing resources through collaborations with chipmakers and cloud service providers. The government is not only focusing on recruiting foreign talent but is also committed to expanding local AI training programmes. Furthermore, the pledge to supply graphics processing units (GPUs) for researchers underscores Singapore’s dedication to fostering a robust AI ecosystem.

In a groundbreaking initiative, the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) unveiled a $52.3 million ($70 million SGD) plan to develop Southeast Asia’s first large language model.
